What is the IELTS Academic Test?

The IELTS Academic test measures your proficiency in the English language in four main areas: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. It is primarily required for university admissions, migration, and professional qualifications.

Test Sections Overview

Listening

The Listening section tests your ability to understand a variety of accents and spoken texts. You will hear four recordings and answer 40 questions based on them. It lasts for approximately 30 minutes.

Reading

The Reading section tests your ability to read and understand academic texts. You will be given three reading passages and answer 40 questions. The section lasts 60 minutes.

Writing

In the Writing section, you will complete two tasks. Task 1 involves describing data presented in a graph, table, chart, or diagram, and Task 2 requires writing an essay in response to a question. This section lasts 60 minutes.

Speaking

The Speaking section tests your spoken English skills in a face-to-face interview with an examiner. It lasts between 11-14 minutes and consists of three parts: Introduction, Discussion, and a Short Talk.

Test Duration

The IELTS Academic test takes approximately **2 hours and 45 minutes** to complete, divided across four sections:

Listening: 30 minutes
Reading: 60 minutes
Writing: 60 minutes
Speaking: 11-14 minutes

Scoring

The IELTS Academic test is scored on a 9-band scale. Each section of the test (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking) is scored individually, and the final band score is an average of the four sections.

Band 8: Very Good User
Band 7: Good User
Band 6: Competent User
Band 5: Modest User
Band 4: Limited User
Band 3: Extremely Limited User
Band 2: Intermittent User
Band 1: Non-user
